There are huge communities in the fediverse posting in non-English languages.
There is the Latin American world speaking Spanish/ Portuguese (plus folks in Spain and Portugal). There’s all the Japanese servers where people post in Hirigana, Katakana and Kanji. There are all the people posting in Chinese characters, definitely the standard characters used in mainland China, and maybe the older character set used in Taiwan too. There’s a bunch of people from the Indian subcontinent, I presume the trade language there is Hindi?
So can we create spaces on SocialHub dedicated to conversation held in those languages? Maybe a category for each non-English language we can find a seed group of champions to host? Some of the things these categories could facilitate include:
- Holding the same kinds of discussions we usually have here, but in their language, so non-English speakers of that language can participate, with English speakers from their community translating/ summarising the feedback and putting it in front of the people who need to see it
- Translation of English texts about the fediverse that they consider important into their language, and coordinating dissemination of them
- Coordinating improvements to the non-English language support in fediverse software, both client and server side
- Providing a space for both instance admins and members to coordinate on things like Trust and Safety
