I looked everywhere in the Preferences but didn’t find the button.
This can be requested, and involves an administrative action. An account can be anonymised or deleted. The latter action can be highly disruptive to a forum, as it comes with deleting of posts, and may break numerous discussion threads.
Just curious and no need to answer, what led you to this choice, or are you just informing?
I don’t want to delete my account right now, but… I am thinking about it.
Mostly due to an uncertainty regarding the forum ownership. I also prefer to use my main fediverse account, so this one is not really necessary anymore, but this is a secondary concern.
Shouldn’t this be a decision made by user? Most sites offer this option, and I was surprised that there is no such option at SocialHub.
Ideally it should be, I guess. Maybe there is an admin setting to allow members to do that themself. I looked on a different forum where I am admin, but did not find it outright though. There are consideration why a community would only allow this via a request. Sometimes situations occur where people act out of emotion or spite, and do a disruptive account removal they later regret. In the case of SocialHub specifically the audience and public content focuses on open technologies and standards that are in the public’s interest and domain (generally speaking, not talking licenses). The intermediate step then offers time and opportunity to reasonably weigh what is the best option.
@silverpill I know I don’t comment here much, but I would be sorry if you went away, not that I’m saying not to do it if you feel the need, of course. In either case, I do want to express appreciation for all the work you do and have done, and the professionalism you have added here. And especially for your generous help for me in getting straightened out with something reasonable in for FEPs, thank you.
Thank you @lynnfoster !
Yes, and I for one totally concur with the sentiment of Lynn. You are the one who currently and for a long time already are instrumental in keeping the FEP Process going strong. Thank you @silverpill ![]()
I see this:
![]()
It says:
Users can’t be deleted if they have posts. Delete all posts before trying to delete a user. (Posts older than 60 days old can’t be deleted.)
So, as @aschrijver suggested, you can ask @admins to anonymize your account, so your account is not associated with your profile and email, and your posts are ‘given’ to the community as an anonymous donation.
I think this is to prevent ‘holes’ in discussions. Since direct messages (DMs) are disabled here (unless you’re an admin), everything posted should be considered public (except for members-only areas), so it should not be a problem to anonymize posts before leaving the community.
As a matter of fact, @silverpill leaving from here would be sad. You said you were concerned about a change of ownership. Can you please expand on your doubts or what you perceive as a risk? This would be a good opportunity to understand what motivates people to be here or not.
Thank you for your kind words @aschrijver and @how !
I am not leaving
I was just wondering how account deletion is supposed to work (just in case).
Ah, good to know.
Up until now, this site has been governed as commons. I think this is very important, and that was the reason why I started contributing to discussions here in the first place. But if that changes, and the site will be used to promote someone’s personal project, especially a commercial one, I would prefer to not give them a free ride.
That being said, I trust @angus, and I don’t think such change will happen under his stewardship. I was more concerned about other offers.
We’d be sorry to lose you @silverpill !
But if anyone does want to delete their account, please reach out and I’ll help you sort it out.
