Ibis release 0.2.0 - Federated Wiki with Shiny Redesign

Ibis is a federated encyclopedia which uses the ActivityPub protocol, just like Mastodon or Lemmy. Users can read and edit articles seamlessly across different instances. Federation ensures that articles get mirrored across many servers, and can be read even if the original instance goes down. The software is written in Rust and uses the cutting-edge Leptos framework based on Webassembly. Ibis is fully open source under the AGPL license, to make future enshittification impossible.

Do you want to start a wiki for a TV series, a videogame, about politics, religion or scientific research? Then Ibis is for you! Setup an instance on your server, it only requires a single binary with PostgreSQL and Nginx. Then you can start editing on the topic of your choice, and connect to other Ibis instances for different topics. Within your own instance you are king, and can decide which articles, which edits and which federation connections are allowed.

Changes

  • Brand new design made with TailwindCSS and daisyui
  • Server-side rendering for blazing fast loading times
  • Snappy editor with live preview and markdown support
  • Dark mode, so that you can write articles from the beach or from your basement
  • New option to require admin approval for new articles, to ensure a high quality standard
  • Proper mobile page
  • Improvements to markdown rendering
  • Page with a list of connected Ibis instances, including single click option to start federating with ibis.wiki
  • New project logo (thanks @Pome-ro)
  • Upgrade to Leptos 0.7.0
  • Optimizations for running tests faster

With this release registrations are now open on ibis.wiki. Here you can write articles specifically related to open source software. To enforce this topic restriction, admin approval is needed for new articles. Of course open.ibis.wiki remains available to write articles about all topics (also with open registration).

nutomic I like it, created a test page https://open.ibis.wiki/article/OMN looking at this code to see if it would work as a base for indymediaback and makinghistory as both are base on a federated wiki

How easy do you think this would be to build projects with ibis working as the federation and text backend for a tag based news and archive front end?
