@fediversereport I remember when the original UK data protection act came in in 1984. https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1984/35/enacted

One immediate question was whether it applied to #Usenet, which was the original federated social media. The general feeling was yes it probably did, but it was impossible for a Usenet node to comply. So everyone ignored the problem, and no legal issues ever arose.
