Hello @angus @how

There are still several major issues with the federation. Many categories are not federated (e.g. Software). Many old threads in federated categories are not fully published, despite having an “ActivityPub” icon.

Given that you’re not active here, could you promote somebody into a role that can manage federation settings?

I’m generally averse to accepting roles of responsibility but at this point it might be something I should accept.

I hear you. I came here because I read Why the social web must work together - Mastodon Blog and saw no mention of the SocialHub. So I thought I should give an eye. I ended up upgrading the software (15 commits behind on the ActivityPub plugin) and cleaning up the review queue. Since there are 3 admins and a handful of moderators, I guess more active admins are required. I have handed over this forum long ago, but I’m still keeping the lights on. Go figure.

I’d rather have you with a keyring since you’re already at home.

@trwnh Have you figured out how to change the federation settings for categories and topics?

It looks like in the AP plugin’s admin panel, I can create “category actors” and “tag actors”. There are a lot of category actors currently, and there is 1 tag actor for federated.

For managing federation settings, I’d suggest the following:

  • Let me know which categories need federation enabled. I think this can be done by creating a category actor for each category that needs it.
  • Let me know which topics need federation enabled. It looks like I can “Publish all posts” (which I think creates AP resources for them but doesn’t deliver those to followers of the category actor?) and then separately I can “Publish Post #1” (which looks like it does deliver it to the followers of the category actor). But I think that has to be done individually for each topic, since I don’t see a way to batch perform actions or query for threads which are not yet published. Also it seems that publishing in this way does not preserve the original posting date in the AP resource? I tried testing “Publish all posts” on a really old thread and in browser.pub it looks like they were all published 2026-06-20 instead of the original dates.
  • If you enable 2FA I think I can grant you admin and you can make the desired changes yourself.

That worked, I can access all posts in the thread.

To fix the timestamps, we can try contacting @pmusaraj, the current maintainer of the plugin.

Federation was not enabled for Standards - SocialHub category. I fixed that.
