Proposal: Run SocialHub forum at activitypub.eu core domain

@how owns the domain activitypub.eu to handle the email for this forum. This domain will expire in September unless a community team is formed to give fresh impetus to the SocialHub community. See: SocialHub developer community: Reboot or Shutdown?

Since W3C is intent to design and manage the activitypub.rocks website, bring it under their wings, and SocialHub is an independent developer center that operates in the grassroots ecosystem it might be a great idea to position directly on the core activitypub.eu domain, and no longer use a subdomain.

A DNS redirect ensures no links get broken by this migration.

To provide access to the dev ecosystem, the current top links can be replaced by the full-blown menu widget that Discourse offers, that allows categorising dev resources into dropdown menu dialogs.

This sounds reasonable?

It seems much more reasonable to let the activitypub.eu domain expire and transition emails over to a different FQDN instead (mail.socialhub.activitypub.rocks?)

Or, if the concern is over management of the DNS records of activitypub.rocks, then a different domain registration could be used for the email.

Mostly, I don’t see a reason to disrupt the forum just because the email provider or email domain is lapsing. I would only see this as worth considering if the forum needed a domain registration within the control of some new managing entity.

My proposal does not have a real relation to the email domain, other than that the domain becomes free to consider other uses, and that that relates to an announcement that is already disruptive all by itself: SocialHub developer community: Reboot or Shutdown?

Proposal:

  • Show independence as grassroots dev community → don’t be subdomain of SocialCG portal.
  • Don’t host under a subdomain at all and use the short and descriptive activitypub.eu
  • Configure a DNS redirect so the migration / repositioning causes minimal disruption.

See the provided context. The organisation currently hosting and paying for SH has said they will shut down the forum in September of this year. Unless someone steps up to take over this work and cover the costs.

Unless we want SocialCG to take over hosting and management of SH (along with everything else under ActivityPub.rocks) I think it would make sense for SH to return to using its own domain name. As it did before being rebooted under ActivityPub.rocks in 2019.

I don’t support using a .eu domain name though. That would imply a much narrower geographical scope than SH aspires to have.

My understanding of the other thread and the post by @how was that the activitypub.eu domain would not be renewed. That’s what the September deadline was about. Did I misunderstand?

I asked @how to give clarity on this and hopefully asap, as the time is short. In light of SocialHub’s future I outlined some steps to take, among which ..

A possible domain name change best be a bullet point in Community Plan proposals then.

If this community thinks activitypub.rocks is unsafe, too close to SocialCG for independence or something, then activitypub.eu can be passed on to the new team. But changing a domain name is pretty hard on history (for remote links and all…) so I would suggest consolidating the community under activitypub.rocks and move the email there. Or simply keep both domains active, since email is generally accepted now and known to be associated with socialhub.activitypub.rocks. In all cases, I’m fine with giving a hand in the transition.

The “social hub” you’re mentioning here has nothing to do with the actual SocialHub. I (and probably others) was not aware of any prior “social hub” before the proposal at APConf in 2019. So, AFAIC, those are two separate entities and the one you’re mentioning was never part of this picture.
